In pure iron, the crystal structure has reasonably minor resistance to the iron atoms slipping earlier one another, and so pure iron is fairly ductile, or tender and easily shaped. In steel, smaller amounts of carbon, other factors, and inclusions inside the iron act as hardening agents that stop the motion of dislocations. The carbon in usual stee
